The photos in Cooking the Roman Way cover not only still life set-ups of finished dishes and produce. They also show Rome through architectural and sculptural details, and human faces. I wanted to bring the Eternal City into the book wherever possible.

Take a look at the B&W shot I've posted. It's taken at Da Gino (one of my favorite trattorias in Rome), where the lunch hour is in full swing. Bruno, wearing the waiter's classic white jacket, passes by carrying plates of pasta. He plays a leading role in the timeless ritual that is a trattoria meal. I took the photo hoping to catch a mood and a storytelling moment.

Food-travel photography has been my specialty for the last thirteen years now. Magazine assignments, the occasional advertising job, and working on cookbooks (The New Provençal Cusine, Enchanted Liguria: A Celebration of the Culture, Lifestyle and Food of the Italian Riviera, Marcella Cucina, Sophia Loren's Recipes and Memories...) have kept me busy. I spent a wonderful year juggling assignments while working on Cooking the Roman Way. Here's wishing you lots of cheery Roman meals!
