I was born and brought up in San Francisco and fell in love with Rome in the mid-Sixties, when my Roman-born mother took my family to live there. After completing undergraduate and advanced degrees in Italian I made Europe my base. For the last twenty years I've been contributing articles on European travel, food and culture to a variety of magazines and newspapers in the United States, England, France, Holland and Italy. I've been a regular contributor to the San Francisco Sunday Chronicle and Chronicle Magazine for a decade, and write about food for the Los Angeles Times Magazine's entertainment section, Gourmet and others.

I'm the author of several non-fiction books, including a collection of essays on Paris and Enchanted Liguria: A Celebration of the Culture, Lifestyle and Food of the Italian Riviera (Rizzoli, New York, and SAGEP, Genoa). My travel and food stories have been published in The Collected Traveler Paris and The Collected Traveler Central Italy, Salon.com's Wanderlust, Travelers' Tales: Adventures in Wine, Saveur Cooks Authentic French and Saveur Cooks Authentic Italian and other anthologies. So far I'm the author of a single work of fiction, a thriller, in French, La Tour de l'Immonde (Baleine, Paris).

I've always loved eating (it shows) and cooking, and I've discovered that food is among my favorite things to write about. Food is travel. Food is culture, history, politics and more. Cooking the Roman Way is my first full-fledged cookbook. It's been quite an experience putting it together, from unearthing and testing the luscious recipes, to coaxing creaky sidebars into singing along with Alison's mouth-watering photographs. I hope Cooking the Roman Way brings you as much joy -- both in terms of good eating and intangible nourishment -- as it has brought me.
All the best, David
